I just joined Spotify some time ago. As far as I know you can’t download the tracks off the internet, but you can download tracks whilst you’re online. Because of copywrite you wouldn’t be able to use Spotify like the old Audio Galaxy.
Spotify exists because it gives real time songs from virtually every style and online it allows anyone to choose songs they want to listen to. But the catch is you have to be online to do it.

It is much like an online radio station, broadcast with the agreement of most of the major labels. You can listen to any track or queue them up to make playlists. You can also create your own radio stations based on the type of music you like.
It is not designed to be a download site, so, using it legally you cannot
save to an ipod as you have not bought the tracks. There are links to buy tracks too.
There is no real catch; the service is funded by advertising, which you hear about every half hour.
I think it is great and hope it lasts and people don’t abuse it by ripping it off.

As the previous two answers said it’s not possible to download MP3s directly. You could record them as they play using something like Audacity though, although this isn’t legal.
