Question by tj: My plan for my first PS3, is it viable?
Hi. I want to get a PS3 in time for 2010.. having the urge to play proper games again. I also want it as a PC with Linux Ubuntu as my other OS.
Coincedentally, the PS3 Slim is out with 250GB hard drive space… enough space for using the PS3 slim as a PC also. I thought I would get that.. but I was left deflated when I found out the Slim version does not allow for other Operating Systems.
So my plan now is to go oposite, to buy an original – but new – PS3 with only 40GB space. Then buy a hard drive upgrade of 320GB which aparently costs around £40. I want to also buy a Logitech wireless keyboard.
So a few basic questions:
Will an original new PS3 of 40 – 80GB still have the ‘other OS’ option?
Does Linux support good versions of programs? Like does it support the full version of MSN with the ability to see display pics etc. Also, I hope Spotify works on it.
Will the Logitech wireless keyboard made specifically for PS3 work on the Linux OS other than the PS3 Operating System? Seems a dumb question to ask, but I want to make sure.
So all in all, Could it almost be like a Supercomputer? Obviously, have to switch back and forth between OS so not quite, but yea, I’d also like to know ADV and DISADV of doing this.
peace.
When I say ADV and DISADV, I mean in general.

Yeah the 40GB should support the OS feature.
However, not all Linux programmes are going to work on the PS3, only some Linux programmes do.
And as of now, there still isnt a PS3 compatible version of Spotify.
However, msn MIGHT be possible you would need to research it.
The keyboard should work fine in Linux

You cannot install Linux on the new PS3 Slim but you can install Linux on all other PS3 models ! Currently, the only PS3 models available are the Slim, 160GB Limited Edition and the soon to be out of production 80GB !
Yellowdog Linux is the PS3 version of linux !
The Logitech keyboard will work with Linux ! You cannot download MSN or Windows to the PS3 !
Obviously since MSN and Windows are Microsoft products and since MS also produces the XBOX, it becomes clear why MS products won’t run on PS3 !

All the “fat” PS3′s can have some versions of Linux installed on them.
Anyone please correct me if I’m wrong
But, I’ve been told that because the PS3 does not have much ram memory, Linux runs pretty slow, and you have to select which OS you want to use when you turn on your PS3, so you have to come out of one, to use the other. What you end up with is certainly not a super computor, it’s a PS3 with some slow PC abilities. If you have a perfectly good PC, I wouldn’t bother:)
